Story Retelling as Cultural Dialogue in Asia (111906)

The study of Asia has looked at Asian cultural flows prolifically. This paper casts attention on the dimension of how story-retelling in Asia reveals nuances and dynamics in cultural negotiation of historical imaginaries, retelling platforms, and social isomorphism. In this context, the focus is not so much the fidelity of the original texts but what story-retellings elucidate and generate as a process. We attempt to reimagine intertextuality in cross-cultural, and to a certain extent, cross-generational story retellings. Examining eight stories in the form of cinema and television productions, the spectrum of retellings encompasses adaptation, localization, cross-media migration, and trans-media expansion. In this work, we apply a theoretical liberation in celebrating the cultural value and creative agency of the receiving context while moving away from notions of the superior original on which fidelity discourses are anchored.
